Ridley Scott's new flick American Gangster was a good one. Though Imnot gonna be saying it's the best film of the year or anything likethat. It was directed well, barely any dull scenes, great acting by anenormous cast and was really well-written. Unfortunately the storynever seemed 'new' to me. I was reminded of other drug-related/crimemovies, like BLOW, CITY OF GOD, and evening TRAINING DAY.....'My Man'.Though it's in the leagues as being entertaining as the above mentionedmovies, it really just never felt like I was watching a 'new' story.But speaking of story, I never knew anything about Frank Lucas, and hisstory is fantastic. A black man who was more influential than hisMafian brethren? Tell me you're kidding. Nope, he was a force in Harlemback in the late 60s and early 70s and barely anyone knows about it.But for me this area of the film was the only stand out part. Surethere are other good scenes, done well, but nothing worth mentioning.Well, scratch that, naked women workin in a drug lab was an eye-openingscene.
Denzel Washington won the Oscar when he portrayed the crooked cop inTraining Day who said 'My Man' all the time. Well, in the AmericanGangster you got him saying this line again, and by God does he have itdown. There are scenes when you know he's gonna say it, and he stillpulls it off incredibly well. Denzel is one actor you really never haveto worry about it in the acting department. You've got Russell 'Mr.Oscar' Crowe playing the other lead, and like always, he always has thecharacter down. He was great in this flick, the accent, the mannerisms,all of it. Though, his character's story was interesting in that he wasin charge of the case to figure out who the big boy druglords were, hisside story with his wife was for me the 'dull' parts of the film. Theywere well-acted and all that, but mostly, it was just characterdevelopment that isn't needed. Russell Crowe's good enough an actor toportray a struggling cop without a family problem. And also let me sayJosh Brolin as the crooked cop was great. I didn't need a side-story ofhim doing tons of drugs and banging prostitutes....but ya know he wasdoing it.
American Gangster was a really good flick. It had amazing acting mixedwith scenes that shed a new light on drug-trafficking....or should Isay Old light. Though since there are so many other drug/crime copfilms out there it seems a little been there done that. But don't letthat sway you if you enjoy good movies and or crime films. And also,Frank Lucas is one hell of an interesting personality. My man. 8.5outta 10

“For Your Consideration” season has begun. I know this because the first Oscar screener of the season has been leaked online. A week and a half before the official release date, Ridley Scott’s new film American Gangster has been uploaded to the bit torrent networks and has already been illegally downloaded by tens of thousands of people. And that’s just in the first 20 hours online. As I write this, over 10,000 users are currently downloading the video off a popular bit torrent website.

Audiences usually stay way from pirated movies due to the notorious bad quality video camera-taped copies. But with Award Season screeners, the movie quality is as good as a retail DVD release. So what is to stop consumers from downloading this film early? American Gangster is set to hit theaters in he United States on November 2nd, but its release in other world territories happens as late as February of 2008. So while this might not have a huge effect on the box office in the U.S., it is likely to hurt foreign markets hard. And as for the U.S. results, that is debatable. Recently horror director Eli Roth blamed piracy for the lower than expected box office numbers of Hostel: Part II. The workprint for his film was leaked online a week before the movie’s national release.

American Gangster stars Russell Crowe as a detective who is working to bring down the drug empire of Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), who is smuggling the heroin into the Manhattan in the coffins of soldiers returning from the Vietnam War. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this film. The movie currently has a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 9.0 rating voted by users on the Internet Movie Database.

Also interesting of note: Paramount Vantage have uploaded free pdf versions of five screenplays to a public “For Your Consideration” website. Two of the scripts available for download (The Kite Runner and There Will Be Blood) have not yet been released theatrically.
